Pull Boring
- Pull boring is a special configuration of counter-boring in which the tool enlarges the existing bore as it is pulled back through the workpiece.
- The boring bar is in tension, rather than compression, providing better control over the hole straightness.
- Pull boring can be used to straighten existing holes or to produce tubing with uniform wall thickness.
- When used to straighten a hole, pull boring tools can be made to follow the center line of the machine by supporting off of the finished hole.
- When used to maintain uniform wall thickness, tools can be made to pilot off of existing holes. Multi-cutter pull boring tools are commonly used for boring centrifugally cast tubing.
- A lantern chuck may be used to align a guide bushing to the centerline of the machine.
